CBD for Dogs: Everything you need to know

They say, “Dogs are man’s best friend.” Ask any pet owner and they’ll agree. Our pets are more than pets - they’re family. We spare no expense to make sure their needs are met. Perhaps the most important need we try to meet as pup parents are the health and wellness needs our four-legged friends have.

For most of us with fur babies, the time will eventually come when we decide to research CBD products for our pets, and the truth is, there’s a ton of information out there, but is it all true? In this article we’ll explore this topic and by the end we hope you’ll get a better understanding of everything there is to know about CBD oil for dogs.

What is CBD oil?

cbd

CBD oil, also known as cannabidiol, is a compound derived from the cannabis and hemp plants. It’s widely known that THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties aka the ‘feeling of being high’ - but CBD contains 0.3% or less THC and some CBD products don’t contain any THC at all. So, the first thing to know about CBD oil and your pets is that you don’t have to worry about them getting high from taking it.

How Does CBD Affect Dogs?

At this point in time, there haven’t been any studies done to see how CBD really affects dogs. What we do know is this: scientists recognize that cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid receptors. These receptors help the body and mind remain balanced from their location in the center and periphery of our nervous systems. This is what we know about our bodies, and so we take that knowledge and apply it to our pets.

For Dogs, What Health Problems can CBD Help with?

While we don’t have definitive scientific data testifying to CBD’s effectiveness in regard to dogs, we do know that many dog owners use CBD on their pets in order to treat pain and even help control seizures. Dog owners also use CBD for its potential benefits to the cardiovascular system, as well as its anti-nausea effects, and anti-anxiety effects. CBD also has potential anti-inflammatory properties and may stimulate your dog’s appetite.

Even though studies are lacking currently, the future looks brighter for understanding CBD’s impact on dogs - especially when it comes to studying how CBD works on dogs with epilepsy.. The American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is slated to sponsor a study, in coordination with Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, which will evaluate how CBD interacts with dogs who have epilepsy and no other treatment has worked. CHF believes this is the first time a study is being done to gain scientific data on how CBD works with dogs who have epilepsy and are treatment-resistant.

CBD in Dogs: Possible Side Effects

If you’re wondering whether CBD oil is ok to use on your fur babies, we believe the answer is yes! We understand from pet owners that CBD oil is well-tolerated. Although the FDA hasn’t yet classified CBD as GRAS, or ‘generally recognized as safe,’ the science available to us at this point indicates that CBD, at certain doses, can be appropriately safe when used on dogs. Now, let’s talk about some possible side effects. Here are the most common:

  • Diarrhea - this is the most common side effect for dogs.
  • Dry mouth - CBD, like marijuana, decreases saliva production in users, thus causing dry mouth.
  • Drowsiness - CBD is calming - and that’s exactly why it could lead to drowsiness.

Of course, as we stated above, the risks haven’t been researched yet and the FDA hasn’t approved CBD as a treatment for dogs or issued information about dosing. This is why we always say to 1) check with your veterinarian first. Make sure they’re on board and never start any vitamin, supplement or any other ritual without their knowledge; and 2) start small: dose small in the beginning and as you begin to understand how your dog is reacting, increase the dosage.

CBD Products on the Market

Of course, before you start your dog on any vitamin or supplement, a call with their veterinarian is always a good first step. Once that conversation happens, there are a few important things to consider as you figure out which CBD oil is best for your pet. Perhaps the most important piece of information is that not all CBD oils are created equal - high quality CBD is better for so many reasons, but perhaps the biggest reason is that better quality CBD means a better chance of it working.

How do you know if it’s high quality CBD? Try to find organic CBD products. Why? When CBD oil isn’t organic it may contain pesticides and other impurities, like fungicides, herbicides, heavy metals or solvents. You want to make sure the CBD oil you're using on your pets doesn’t have these contaminants.

Here’s another trick: Instead of buying your dog CBD dog treats, find a high quality CBD oil and administer it on your own. This allows you to have control over your dog’s dosage - and that freedom is important especially in the beginning when you’re trying to figure out exactly how much CBD your dog is or isn’t responding to.
